Northallerton Town Council has announced its full support for Richmond’s bid to become the UK’s first Town of Culture in 2028, emphasising the “transformational potential” of the programme for communities across North Yorkshire. Following detailed consideration, councillors agreed that supporting Richmond’s ambitious and community‑led proposal would deliver the greatest benefit for the region, rather than submitting a separate bid. The Council highlighted the importance of a united cultural offer that showcases the strength and diversity of North Yorkshire.
Cllr Andrew Hugill, Mayor of Northallerton, said: “Richmond has a proud cultural heritage and a remarkable ability to bring people together. Its Town of Culture bid is imaginative, inclusive and rooted in the voices of local residents.
Northallerton Town Council is delighted to support this effort and to stand alongside our neighbours in strengthening North Yorkshire’s cultural identity.” Richmond’s bid is being led by the Richmond Community Interest Company, supported by a newly established Steering Group with expertise in youth culture, communications and programming. Extensive consultation is underway with residents, schools, cultural venues and community organisations, including the Green Howards Regimental Museum, the Georgian Theatre Royal, The Station, Richmond Castle, Catterick Garrison and the Veterans History Club.
The bid has also received strong backing from local councillors and the area’s MP, the Rt Hon Rishi Sunak, whose endorsement in the House of Commons has added further momentum. Northallerton Town Council has offered practical support and suggested that The Forum could serve as a satellite venue for performances, screenings and community events. With excellent transport links and an active Town Team, Northallerton is well placed to contribute to a wider cultural programme that spans the region.
Cllr Hugill added: “We have seen first-hand how cultural initiatives can energise communities, boost participation and create lasting pride. Richmond’s bid represents a fantastic opportunity for the whole area, and we look forward to working closely with partners to help secure a successful outcome for North Yorkshire.”
Richmond’s Town of Culture team is currently gathering public input through surveys, market‑place engagement events and online platforms. Residents across the district are encouraged to share their ideas and aspirations for the 2028 programme.
